Let us frame the question this way. Looking for just the right sofa or chair and not finding exactly what you want? That's where custom furniture comes into play. Typically the domain of interior decorators or high-end furniture manufacturers, a new business in Blawnox is bringing custom upholstered furniture to the masses.
Blawnox Upholstery opened in June as a one-stop shop for custom furniture designed by you, the customer. It carries Chevran's Bedford Collection of furniture made in America of kiln-dried hardwoods, primarily maple. Double-doweled construction ensures solid construction, with a choice of 10 different stains for wood. The shop, which is adjacent to the Old Post Office, stocks hundreds of fabrics from assorted makers, and all are discounted 25 percent.
But the best part is the price. A sofa averages $1,500, depending on fabric and cushion content, while a custom wing chair is $900. That's less than half the price of some national chain stores, which can charge that much just to upholster.
